Description

Enshrined in the sacred inner sanctuary of Senso-ji's Main Hall, this Maedachi is a substitute image displayed in place of the temple’s principal image, Sho Kannon Bosatsu. Senso-ji traditionally attributes the image to Jikaku Daishi. Both the principal image and the Maedachi are normally hidden, but the Maedachi alone is unveiled to worshippers during the Gokuden Opening Service at 2:00 p.m. every December 13. The principal image is traditionally said to have appeared in 628 and has been kept absolutely hidden since 645, making this annual unveiling of the Maedachi an especially important opportunity to encounter Senso-ji's Kannon devotion directly.
