DescriptionThe principal image of Ekoin in Ryogoku is a large seated bronze Amida Nyorai. According to the temple, it was made by Kamaya Rokuemon, known as “Kamaroku,” and installed in 1705. The image measures six shaku five sun five bu in height, with a lotus pedestal three shaku four sun five bu high, and is noted for its full, compassionate expression. Ekoin was founded to memorialize more than 100,000 victims of the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657 and later became a place of prayer for victims of disasters, accidents, and people who died without anyone to mourn them. A group of one thousand Jizo images is enshrined behind the principal image, creating a solemn devotional setting. In Ryogoku, also famous for sumo history and the grave of Nezumi Kozo, this Amida image embodies the temple’s long tradition of memorial prayer.
