DescriptionThe Four Heavenly Kings Gate at Takaosan Yakuoin enshrines Zochoten, Jikokuten, Tamonten, and Komokuten. According to the temple’s official site, the gate was built in 1984 as part of the 1,150th memorial anniversary of Kobo Daishi, with the four guardian deities placed inside to protect the four directions. Takaosan Yakuoin is a major temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism, traditionally founded by Gyoki in 744, and today venerates Izuna Daigongen as its principal deity. Located on the main pilgrimage route through Mount Takao, these visible guardian statues can be viewed at close range by visitors passing through one of Tokyo’s best-known mountain temples.
