DescriptionThe principal image of Shibamata Taishakuten Daikyoji is an image of Taishakuten carved on a wooden plaque, traditionally said to have been carved by Nichiren Shonin himself. One side bears the title Namu Myoho Renge Kyo and a passage from the Lotus Sutra’s Medicine King chapter, while the other depicts Taishakuten in a fierce form holding a sword in his right hand. The image was lost during the mid-Edo period and rediscovered during repairs to the Main Hall in 1779. Because the day of its rediscovery was a Koshin day, Koshin worship became closely associated with Shibamata Taishakuten, and many visitors still come on the Koshin day that occurs every 60 days. Anyone may enter Taishakudo Hall to worship; the principal image is enshrined in the front zushi. It is unveiled for requested prayer and memorial services, and on the Koshin day that comes every 60 days the wooden-plaque principal image remains on open display for general worship.
