DescriptionThe principal image of Jojuin Temple, known as Tako Yakushi Nyorai, is a seated Yakushi Nyorai enshrined as a Yakushi triad with Nikko and Gakko Bodhisattvas as attendants. Tradition holds that Ennin, the monk known as Jikaku Daishi, enshrined it when he came to Meguro in 858. The image is called “Tako Yakushi” because three octopuses support its lotus pedestal, a form linked to the story that a small Yakushi image Ennin cast into the sea to calm rough waters on his return from China later drifted ashore riding on an octopus. Long revered for healing and relief from illness, the principal image is normally kept secret and is unveiled only on January 8 each year for the Hatsuyakushi observance.
