DescriptionThe “Arai Kannon” on the grounds of Koganji Temple is a stone image of Sho Kannon Bodhisattva. Worshippers pour water over the statue and wash the part corresponding to an afflicted area of their own body with a cloth, in the belief that it may bring healing. The original statue was erected and donated for memorial purposes by parishioner Yaneya Kiheiji, who lost his wife in the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. After becoming worn through many years of worship, it was withdrawn from regular worship in 1992. The present second-generation image was donated by parishioner Nakabori Yoshie and created by sculptor Yatsuyanagi Naoki; it was consecrated on November 27, 1992. Although it serves as an attendant image to the temple’s principal Togenuki Jizo, it has attracted widespread devotion and can be worshipped 24 hours a day. The original statue is also unveiled on the 18th of every month until 14:00.
