Description

The stone Benzaiten enshrined in the rock grotto beside the Main Hall at Banryuji Temple is one of the Yamanote Seven Gods of Fortune and is known as Iwaya Benzaiten. According to Meguro City’s Digital Encyclopedia, the small image is about 30 cm high and is enshrined in a stone shrine within the grotto. In 1709, Shomyo-in Temple was moved from below Gyouninzaka to this site and rebuilt under the name Banryuji; tradition links this renewal to worship of Iwaya Benzaiten as a guardian of Edo’s ura-kimon. Today it remains venerated as the Benzaiten of the Yamanote Seven Gods of Fortune, and visitors can worship at the grotto free of charge.
