DescriptionThe “Oi no Obotoke” at Yogyokuin Nyorai-ji Temple consists of five large Tathagata images—Shaka, Amida, Dainichi, Hosho, and Yakushi—enshrined side by side in Zuioden Hall. All five are joined-wood sculptures with gold leaf applied to the flesh areas, and the largest, the central Dainichi Nyorai, is 3.21 meters high. The group originated with Five Wisdom Tathagatas created by the monk Mokujiki Tansho together with his disciples; after fires, the four images other than Yakushi Nyorai were recreated around 1746. Known in Edo as the “Takanawa Daibutsu,” they became a celebrated sight before the temple moved to its present location in the Meiji period. Now designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Shinagawa City, the five monumental Tathagatas can be viewed at close range from 9:00 to 16:00.
