Description

The bronze seated Jizo Bosatsu at Shinshoji Temple is one of the Edo Six Jizo. Jizobo Shogen initiated the project in 1706 to erect six Jizo images at the main road entrances to Edo, and this statue was made in 1714 as the fourth of the six, guarding the Nakasendo route. It was cast by Ota Suruga-no-kami Fujiwara Masayoshi, a metal caster of Kanda Nabemachi. The joroku-scale image is about 2.7 meters high and was once gilded. This large Jizo has watched over travelers on the Nakasendo, and today it remains outdoors and open to general worship.
