Description

On the northeastern slope of Daienji Temple’s grounds is a group of about 520 stone figures. A Shaka triad stands at the center, surrounded by the Sixteen Arhats and the Ten Great Disciples, with roughly 500 arhat figures arranged behind them. The central Shaka Nyorai bears an inscription dated 1781, and many of the other figures are thought to have been made after that time. The group is said to have been created through public donations to memorialize those who died in the 1772 Gyōnin-zaka Great Fire, and it was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo (historical materials) in 1970. Because the figures stand outdoors, visitors can worship them at close range and observe their individual expressions during opening hours.
