DescriptionThe surviving face of the Ueno Daibutsu is preserved on Daibutsuyama in Ueno Park. After the Great Buddha was donated by Hori Naoyori in 1631, it repeatedly suffered damage and restoration after earthquakes and fires. Its head fell during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and during World War II the body was requisitioned under a wartime metal requisition order, leaving only the face today. A pagoda was built on the former site of the Great Buddha Hall in 1966, and in 1972 the surviving face of the Great Buddha was restored and re-enshrined in its present relief-like form. The pagoda houses the Yakushi Triad formerly enshrined in the old Yakushi Hall. Rather than a complete statue, visitors encounter the surviving face itself—a distinctive Tokyo Buddhist site shaped by centuries of disaster and history.
