DescriptionThe National Treasure Bronze Seated Shaka Nyorai with Pendant Legs (Hakuho Buddha) is enshrined in the Shaka Hall at Jindaiji Temple. The 83.9 cm-tall bronze image is thought to date to the latter half or end of the 7th century, in the late Asuka period. Its pendant-leg seated pose, youthful gentle expression, soft modeling of the body, and orderly robe folds are characteristic of Hakuho-period Buddhist sculpture. Rediscovered beneath the altar of the Ganzan Daishi Hall in 1909, it was designated a National Treasure in 2017. Until Hakuho-in is completed, visitors may worship it freely in the Shaka Hall, open from 9:30 to 16:00.
