DescriptionA seated stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva is enshrined in a Jizo Hall in the Daihata district of Nametsu, Nakajima Village. The statue is about 170 cm high, and an inscription on its back dates it to Kenmu 2 (1335). According to a long-standing tradition, the image would sweat before some unusual event occurred, warning the people; this gave rise to the name “Oshu Sweating Jizo.” It is said to have attracted many pilgrims through the end of the Edo period. In 1975 (Showa 50), it became Nakajima Village’s first designated Important Cultural Property. Today it is introduced as a village sightseeing spot that anyone can visit. It is a highly worthwhile Buddhist spot where visitors can see a large stone image bearing a medieval date inscription in person.
