DescriptionAn Eleven-Faced Kannon is enshrined in the Kannon Hall of Hinatayama Nichirinji Temple, the 24th temple of the Aizu Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. According to the official Japan Heritage “Aizu Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage” site, the Kannon Hall once stood on level ground and is said to have been moved to its present location in 1790 (Kansei 2), after the mountainside was opened up. The principal image is normally hidden but is unveiled once a year on August 9. Reached by climbing 54 stone steps to the Kannon Hall in the mountains, this pilgrimage site offers a direct sense of Aizu’s pilgrimage culture and devotion to hidden Buddhist images.
