Description

A group of cliff-carved Buddhist images from the Kamakura period remains on the hill behind Henshoin Temple in Onahama Sumiyoshi, Iwaki City. Multiple niches were cut into the western cliff face, and despite advanced weathering, a seated Tathagata-form image and a triad remain. The site was designated a Historic Site by Iwaki City in 1986 and is still included in the Iwaki Digital Museum's "Course Touring Cultural Properties of the Onahama District" as a site for on-location viewing. It is one of Iwaki's representative cliff-carved Buddhist sites, where visitors can trace medieval Buddhist figures integrated with the natural rock face.
