DescriptionA group of cliff-carved Buddhist images is carved into a cave behind the Sakedachi settlement in Yamairi, Kaneyama Town. On a rock wall about 5 m wide, 2 m high, and 1.5 m deep, 51 figures were carved in the late Edo period, of which 36 remain today due to weathering. Many depict Fudo Myoo. Tradition holds that, in response to the devastation caused by the Tenmei and Tenpo famines, a mountain ascetic carved them while praying for abundant harvests and relief from disease and suffering. The images are said to have originally been painted. This distinctive group allows visitors to encounter in person a form of folk belief preserved in Oku-Aizu. The site can be visited outside the winter season.
