DescriptionAt Bishamondo Hall of Gankakuji Temple are enshrined a triad of Bishamonten and his attendants, Kisshoten and Zennishi Doji. According to temple tradition, Jikaku Daishi Ennin opened Mt. Iwatsuno in 851 (Ninju 1), and in 860 (Jogan 2) carved and enshrined Bishamonten while making three bows for each stroke of the blade. The three images are designated Important Cultural Properties of Fukushima Prefecture, and Bishamonten is a hidden image unveiled once every 12 years in the Year of the Tiger. Across the temple mountain are also 808 line-carved Buddhist figures, including the Thirty-Three Kannon of the Saigoku pilgrimage, making the entire mountain a place of prayer.
