DescriptionThe principal image of Hodoji Temple, affectionately known as the “Zenkoji of Aizu,” is a Zenkoji-style bronze triad with Amida Nyorai at the center and two attendant figures. An inscription on the back of the central image confirms that it was cast in 1276 (Kenji 2), during the Kamakura period, and it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Tradition holds that the triad was enshrined as an embodiment of the Zenkoji Nyorai, and it continues to be revered as a Buddhist image preserving the Zenkoji faith that spread throughout the Aizu region. Viewing in the main hall requires an advance reservation for a specific date and time, and visiting hours are 9:00-17:00.
