DescriptionHoyoji Temple preserves two wooden standing statues of Kongorikishi in its Kannon Hall. Carved from single blocks of zelkova wood, they are believed to date from the late Heian period and are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Hoyoji is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Tokudo in 720 (Yoro 4) and moved to its present site and revived by Tokuitsu during the Daido era (806-810). The Kannon Hall houses the Kongorikishi statues along with several other cultural properties and is also the 29th temple of the Aizu Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. Advance reservation and a donation are required to view the cultural properties inside the hall, while the exterior may be viewed at any time.
