Description

The principal image of Kongozan Nyohoji Temple is Torioi Sho-Kanzeon Bosatsu. According to temple tradition, a tiny Torioi Kannon image measuring one sun and eight bu is enshrined inside a statue of Sho-Kannon said to have been carved by Gyoki, and the temple was founded by Master Tokuitsu in 807 (Daido 2). It is revered as one of the Aizu Korori Three Kannon and as the extra concluding temple of the Aizu Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. The unusual Kannon Hall, entered from the east and exited to the west, symbolizes peaceful rebirth in the Western Pure Land. The principal image is normally hidden, but it is specially unveiled during the Wakaba Festival every year from May 1 to June 30 and may be viewed freely.
