DescriptionTodaiji’s Hokkedo, also known as Sangatsudo, enshrines a standing Fukukensaku Kannon Bosatsu as its principal image. With three eyes and multiple arms, the figure conveys a strong determination to draw all beings toward salvation. The hall also contains Tempyo-period images such as Bonten, Taishakuten and the Four Heavenly Kings, filling the still space with concentrated tension. Unlike the open scale of the Great Buddha Hall, Hokkedo carries a solemnity in which ancient prayer seems densely condensed.
