DescriptionA wooden seated Amida Nyorai statue preserved at Seiganji Temple in Okunai, Aomori City. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Aomori City, the joined-wood statue is covered entirely in gold leaf and backed by a boat-shaped halo. Its drapery shows honpa-shiki carving, in which large and small wave-like folds alternate, a style said to have no other example in Aomori City. Temple tradition holds that Prince Shotoku carved it to memorialize his mother; it later passed through Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Edo, and was bestowed on Seiganji after World War II. Aomori City asks people wishing to view designated cultural properties owned by temples and similar institutions to inquire in advance, so visitors coming specifically to see the statue should confirm with the Cultural Heritage Division or Seiganji Temple.
