Description

The principal image of Shunkozan Engakuji Temple, the Eleven-Faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva, is a hidden Buddhist image said in temple tradition to have been enshrined here by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in Daido 2 (807), and is traditionally attributed to Prince Shotoku. It was deeply revered by sailors of Fukaura Port and people connected with Kitamaebune ships as a Kannon for safety at sea. Engakuji continues to receive pilgrims as the 10th temple of the Tsugaru Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. The principal image is unveiled only once every 33 years, and the temple's official website states that the next opening is scheduled to begin on July 17, 2051. The long interval between unveilings itself conveys the special religious significance of this Kannon image.
