Description

Nanasaki Kannon of Hoshozan Fugenin Temple is a hidden Kannon image revered as part of the Nukanobu Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. The present Nanasaki Kannon was donated in Jokyo 4 (1687) by Nanbu Shigenobu as an omaedachi image and is enshrined in the Kannon Hall. Fugenin is an ancient temple said to have been founded in the early Heian period, and is also associated with the legends of Nanso-bo of Lake Towada and Princess Nanasaki. Usually kept behind closed doors as a hidden image, the temple's official website clearly states that it is opened for viewing every year on the 17th day of the first lunar month, and that the Nanasaki Kannon Okomori Goma ritual is held from 8:00 p.m. on the same day.
