Description

Kakuoin Temple's principal image, Namikiri Fudoson (Namikiri Fudo Myoo), has long been revered by successive lords of the Hirosaki Domain as a Buddhist protector at a temple of prayer for the domain. Its name, meaning 'Wave-Cutting Fudo,' comes from a tradition that Tsugaru Tamenobu escaped danger from a violent storm during his unification of Tsugaru, and the deity is worshipped for protection from misfortune and calamity. The temple is said to have begun in the time of the fifth domain lord, Tsugaru Nobuhisa, when the senior retainer Kitamura enshrined the Fudoson at Chausudate. Today it is a temple of the Daigo branch of Shingon Buddhism and serves as the 7th temple of the Tsugaru Kobo Daishi Pilgrimage. Official Aomori tourism information states that worship is possible from 8:00 to 17:00.
