Description

A pair of Nio guardian statues stands on both sides of the sanmon gate at Seiganji Temple, welcoming worshippers. Official Aomori tourism information explains that the gate was relocated in Meiji 6 (1873) from the main enclosure of the former Shichinohe Castle and that Nio statues are enshrined on both sides. A nationwide tourism information source affiliated with the Japan Tourism Agency also states that the Nio statues were moved in the same year from Niidate Hachimangu Shrine in Kamikita Town. Visitors can see the historic castle gate and the powerful Nio guardians together outdoors, making this a distinctive Buddhist spot in Shichinohe.
