DescriptionOn the grounds of Gikeiji Temple, the 19th stop of the Tsugaru Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, are 33 stone Kannon images said to have once been used by Kitamaebune and other ships arriving from western Japan as protective objects and ballast. Set on a hill overlooking the Tsugaru Strait, they can be visited together with the temple’s syncretic grounds, where the main hall, Kannon Hall, and Bentendo stand. The temple’s Enku Buddha is a hidden image and cannot be viewed directly, but these stone Kannon statues are actual objects of worship that visitors can see one by one in the grounds.
