DescriptionThe seated Bodhisattva at Enjuin Temple is an Aomori Prefectural Treasure said to have been carved by Enku around Kanbun 7 (1667), in the early Edo period, and is the only surviving Enku Buddha on the west coast. At the temple it has been handed down as an image of Yakushi Nyorai and is also known as the "Black Principal Image Drifted at Sea." A tradition says that it was caught in a fishing net off the coast of Ajigasawa. The entire statue is now black, though it is thought originally to have had a plain, unpainted wood finish. It was made at roughly the same time as the group of Enku sculptures on the Tsugaru Peninsula. Advance application is required for viewing.
