DescriptionThe standing Eleven-Faced Kannon at Eko-in Temple is an Aomori Prefectural Treasure believed to date from the late Heian to Kamakura period. The wooden statue was carved with the head and torso from a single block and was handed down from Hasedera Temple, which once stood at the foot of Mount Nakuidake. Although it has undergone later recarving and suffered damage, older stylistic features remain in details such as the small faces above the head. It is especially important because it is considered the oldest Buddhist statue made within Aomori Prefecture. It is normally not open to the public, but is unveiled each year on August 20.
