Description

Unosumai Kannon Hall preserves a standing wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. An inscription on the back dates it to 1510, making it the oldest dated medieval Buddhist image known in the Kamaishi and Kamihei area. The hall was completely destroyed by the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami, but although damaged, the principal image was not swept away; it was rescued, restored, and returned in 2022 to a rebuilt hall on higher ground. This secret image carries roughly five centuries of local devotion together with the memory of rescuing and restoring cultural property after the disaster.
