DescriptionOyone Jizo is enshrined outdoors at Joenji Temple in Sawauchi, Nishiwaga. According to local tradition, during the Tenpo famine, when the area suffered a severe crop failure, a girl named Oyone was sent to the domain in place of the rice tax, and the Jizo was erected in her memory. The local folk song Sawauchi Jinku is also said to tell Oyone’s story, making the image a bearer of regional memory and history. Unlike a famous ancient or monumental Buddha, this is a deeply local Buddhist spot born from mourning for one woman and the prayers of villagers.
