DescriptionShogakuji Temple in Ueda, Morioka, preserves three wooden Buddhist images designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Morioka City: a seated Amida Nyorai, seated Dainichi Nyorai, and standing Sho Kannon, all designated in 1995. The Dainichi is transmitted as the “Morioka Castle Dainichi Nyorai,” said to have survived Meiji-period anti-Buddhist destruction, while the Sho Kannon is believed to be the temple treasure known as the “Sweating Kannon.” The temple also preserves Musho Kannon, the 18th station of the Morioka Thirty-Three Kannon, and Mabiki Jizo. The concentration of several images with distinct histories in one temple makes it a notable Buddhist destination.
