DescriptionAyumi Kannon is the new principal image of Tachiyama Kannon Hall, whose former hall and principal image were lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami. The statue was carved from a pine damaged at Takata Matsubara. With cooperation from 25 temples centered in Nara Prefecture, participants from across Japan each made a single chisel cut, creating a collective devotional work involving more than 5,000 people. Completed in April 2014, it toured temples around Japan before being donated to Rikuzentakata and was formally enshrined in the rebuilt hall in August 2016. The image is 85 cm high and 130 cm overall, embodying prayers for disaster victims and recovery in wood from the stricken landscape itself.
