DescriptionKaizoin Temple in Noda preserves stone images of Yakushi Nyorai and Fudo Myoo. They were donated in the mid-Edo period by Maekawa Zenbei Tomimasa, the fourth head of the wealthy Maekawa merchant family of Kirikiri, who was born in Noda and later adopted into that family. Designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Noda Village, the two images reflect both local religious devotion and the donor’s continuing attachment to his birthplace. The contrasting figures of the healing Buddha Yakushi and the fierce Fudo are preserved side by side, conveying an unusual combination of Edo-period faith and merchant patronage.
