Description

A pair of large wooden Nio guardians stands in the gate of Jokenji Temple in Tsuchibuchi, Tono. Designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Tono City, the figures are about 3.5 m in overall height. They were originally enshrined at Myosenji on Mt. Hayachine and were transferred to Jokenji during the early-Meiji separation of Shinto and Buddhism; a document from 1870 records their transfer from Hayachine Shrine. They still greet visitors on both sides of the gate and can be viewed at close range on the way to Kappa-buchi. The chance to see 3.5-meter-class Nio figures during normal visiting hours makes this one of Tono’s most impressive Buddhist spots.
