Description

Thirty-three stone Kannon images remain around the Ohachi, the crater rim at the summit of Mt. Iwate. In 1857, when the mountain drew deep devotion as Iwawashiyama Daigongen, they were donated by a confraternity of townspeople from Morioka together with guideposts for the pilgrimage route. In the Edo period, worshippers dressed in white made an ascent known as Oyamakake, heading for the inner shrine at the summit. The thirty-three Kannon images are still scattered along the crater rim at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level, allowing hikers to visit them amid the rugged landscape of an active volcano. This distinctively Iwate Buddhist site preserves the historical union of mountain worship and Buddhism.

Visiting Status Accessible by hiking. Since July 1, 2026, the summit can be reached from the four eastern trailheads: Umagaeshi, Yakehashiri, Uwabo, and Omisaka. Volcanic Alert Level 2 remains in effect, and access on the western side is still restricted. Check current local restrictions and volcanic information in advance and use proper mountain-climbing equipment.
