DescriptionThe golden omaedachi Eleven-Faced Kannon is enshrined in the Kannon Hall of Kiyomizudera Temple in Ota, Hanamaki. Temple tradition says the site began in 807 when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined an Eleven-Faced Kannon to pray for victory, and it is now the first station of the Oshu Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. Tradition further says that Jikaku Daishi later carved a Kannon over seven shaku high and placed inside it a small Eleven-Faced Kannon associated with Tamuramaro. The secret principal image itself is normally hidden, but the golden omaedachi can be worshipped routinely in the Kannon Hall, preserving the living devotion of this ancient pilgrimage site, which is also called one of Japan’s Three Kiyomizu temples.
