Description

This standing wooden Kannon is the principal image of Matsuzaki Kannon Hall, the second station of the Tono Seven Kannon, and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. Created in 1606, it is a large 199.4 cm single-block image with interior hollowing. An ink inscription on the back records details of the dedication and is the oldest surviving document for the history of Matsuzaki Kannon. The principal image survived a Genroku-era wildfire that destroyed the hall and is now protected in the inner sanctuary of the hall rebuilt in 1724. It preserves one of the older principal images of the Tono Seven Kannon, and during its once-a-year unveiling visitors can worship the original figure, nearly two meters high.
