Description

A stone-carved Fudo Myoo is enshrined on the rock wall of Fudo Waterfall, deep within the grounds of Sakuramatsu Shrine in Hachimantai. The roughly 15-meter waterfall is selected among Japan’s 100 Waterfalls and Iwate’s Twenty Famous Waters, and the area is said to have once been a training ground for mountain ascetics. Fudo Myoo is worshipped immediately beside the forcefully falling water, creating a setting where water, rock, and deep forest merge with memories of nature worship and Shugendo practice. Unlike an image inside a hall, visitors face Fudo Myoo amid the roar and spray of the waterfall, making this one of Iwate’s most memorable outdoor Buddhist spots.
