Description

A Sho Kannon image is enshrined inside Rokando Cave. It was erected in 1970 as a prayer for safety within the cave. At a time when the cave was still only partly developed, it is said that five adults carried the statue’s components inside and assembled it underground. The image stands in a distinctive space surrounded by sheer marble walls, with the rock behind it resembling the trunk of a sal tree. Rokando’s official website also asks visitors to quietly place their hands together in prayer. Encountering a Buddhist image integrated with natural rock walls in the middle of a limestone-cave exploration makes this one of Iwate’s more unusual cave-type Buddhist spots.

Visiting Area Inside the cave

Visiting Status Normally viewable while entering the cave. March–October 8:30–16:30. Individual visitors do not need reservations for the standard course; cave admission is 1,100 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary and junior-high-school students. From November through February, regular admission is generally available on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; general weekday admission is suspended, while reserved admission is accepted. Rokando's official winter reception hours are 8:30–16:00. Confirm the latest operating information before visiting.
