DescriptionThe Thousand Jizo Hall survives at Shojuji, the family temple of the Nanbu clan. It was originally the first story of a roughly 35-meter five-story pagoda built in 1808 during the rule of Nanbu Toshitaka, the 11th lord of the Morioka domain. After the temple declined in the Meiji period, only the first story survived. In 1922 a movement began to donate one thousand Jizo images to support the maintenance of the hall, and at the center is enshrined Koyasu Jizo, also known as Kameko Daimyojin, associated with the Nanbu family. The unusual interior, surrounded by numerous Jizo within the surviving first story of the former five-story pagoda, is unveiled during Matsunouchi and makes this a particularly distinctive Buddhist destination.
