DescriptionTamazaki Komagata Shrine in Tamazato, Esashi, Oshu, preserves a standing wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Oshu City. Before the Meiji period the site was known as Tamazaki Kannon, and the statue preserves the Eleven-Faced Kannon devotion of the former Gyokusenji Temple that once stood here, strongly reflecting the history of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism. The image is now stored in the shrine’s Treasure House, which can be visited by advance reservation. It is a distinctive Buddhist destination where visitors can actually view a Kannon image preserved and protected within a Shinto shrine, offering a vivid link to the religious history of the Esashi region.
