Description

This Kannon pilgrimage route passes through the nationally designated historic site of the Kunimiyama abandoned temple complex, where a large mountain temple flourished before the rise of Hiraizumi. Near the summit stands the granite Peace Great Kannon, about 4 m high and weighing roughly 2,250 kg, erected to pray for peace and the repose of those killed in war. It was made by sculptor Ishida Kansen of Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, erected in 1962, and consecrated on New Year’s Day the following year. By 1968 the Thirty-Three Kannon had been installed, forming a mountain pilgrimage route from Gokurakuji through Tainai-kuguri and the Daihikaku lookout to the Peace Great Kannon. It is a distinctive Buddhist destination where visitors can walk among Buddhist images and the remains of ancient mountain Buddhism.
