Description

Kongoshuin Temple in Uchimaru, Morioka, enshrines a pair of seated wooden Dainichi Nyorai representing the Kongokai and Taizokai realms. Both are made in joined-wood construction with lacquer and gold leaf and are housed in the same shrine. The Kongokai image is 44.5 cm high and dates to the middle Edo period, while the Taizokai image is 41.0 cm high and dates to the late Edo period. The Kongokai figure has a gentle expression, while the Taizokai figure appears more stern, making the paired transmission of the two Dainichi forms especially distinctive. Originally brought from Churenji Temple on Mt. Yudono in Yamagata Prefecture, the pair is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Morioka City. Normally secret, the images are unveiled in Years of the Sheep and Monkey, linking Dewa Sanzan devotion with the esoteric Buddhist culture of Morioka.
