DescriptionRyushoji Temple in Okirai, Sanriku-cho, Ofunato, enshrines a Sho Kannon Bosatsu traditionally said to have been transported here by ship from Edo during the Tenmei era (1781–1789). The statue is attributed to a Buddhist sculptor known as “Izumi-no-kami” of Kanda, Edo. It is known for an expression combining sternness and gentleness, and official tourism sources present the Buddhist image itself as “Ryushoji Sho Kannon.” Visiting this Edo-period Kannon preserved at a temple on the Sanriku coast gives this site particular value as a Buddhist destination.
