DescriptionThe Amida Triad preserved at Koshoji Temple consists of a central seated Amida Nyorai with seated Kannon and Seishi Bosatsu attendants. Dating to the late Heian period, the group is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. According to temple tradition, during the time of Fujiwara no Hidehira, the third ruler of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, an Amida Hall was built for about 3,000 miners working at Nojiri Gold Mine, one of the five gold mines of Kesen, marking the temple’s origin. The Amida Nyorai is made in joined-wood construction, while the two attendant bodhisattvas are carved from single blocks. Despite periods without a resident priest, floods, fires, and repeated relocations, all three images have been preserved together. They are representative ancient Buddhist images of Sumita that testify to the spread of Hiraizumi culture into the Kesen region.
