DescriptionWithin the grounds of Kanpukuji Temple are Buddhist statues representing each stop from No. 1 through No. 88 of the Shikoku 88-Temple Pilgrimage. Visitors can worship the figures in sequence along a path winding among unusual rock formations, creating a distinctive sacred route where the experience of the Shikoku pilgrimage can be recreated while remaining in Iwate. Kanpukuji is said to have been founded in 1191 by Inubomaru, the eldest son of Kudo Suketsune, who built the temple and invited the priest Encho Hoin to serve as its founder. A legend also says that Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his followers stopped here while traveling north. Advance reservation is required for viewing, which is available year-round free of charge.
