DescriptionTendaiji Temple’s standing wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property measuring 174 cm high. Carved from a single piece of katsura wood, it closely resembles the temple’s principal Sho Kannon image in overall form and facial features, and is therefore thought to have been made by the same sculptor at around the same time. It is housed together with the Sho Kannon in the Cultural Property Repository behind the Main Hall, allowing visitors to see at close range an ancient wooden Buddhist image from the middle Heian period preserved in northern Tohoku. The Cultural Property Repository is included in the areas open to visitors at Tendaiji.
