DescriptionTachibana Bishamondo Hall in Kitakami preserves one standing wooden Bishamonten and two standing wooden Heavenly Kings, all nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. The Bishamonten is 102.1 cm high, carved from a single block of wood using the nata-bori technique, and dates to the middle Heian period. It shows the typical Four Heavenly Kings form standing on a demon. The two Heavenly Kings stand 160.5 cm and 154.5 cm high, are carved from single pieces of katsura wood, and are thought to represent Jikokuten and Zochoten. Together the three statues preserve the ancient Buddhist culture that once flourished around Mt. Kunimi. All are housed in a repository and can be viewed in person with advance contact.
