DescriptionThe standing wooden Tobatsu Bishamonten preserved at Chifuku Atago Shrine in Fujisato, Esashi, Oshu, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The 175 cm statue is carved from a single piece of Japanese horse-chestnut wood and is thought to have been made locally around the 11th century. The wrathful Bishamonten stands supported at the feet by the earth goddess Jitenjo, while nearly the entire surface except the face bears distinctive horizontal round-chisel marks characteristic of the nata-bori technique. Oshu City describes the image as a Heian-period sculpture worthy of representing Tohoku. It is now housed in a repository and can be viewed in person with an advance reservation and admission fee.
